Join Fairbanks Arts in the Bear Gallery for a literary reading with Gerri Brightwell, Joseph Holt, Sara Eliza Johnson, and Daryl Farmer.

Gerri Brightwell is the author of the novels Dead of Winter (Salt, 2016), The Dark Lantern (Crown, 2008), and Cold Country (Duckworth, 2003). Her story “Cuckoo” was selected as a Top 50 story for the 2021 BBC National Short Story Award. Her short work has appeared in many venues including The Best American Mystery Stories 2017, Alaska Quarterly Review, Southeast Review, Copper Nickel, Redivider, and BBC Radio 4’s Opening Lines. Gerri will read from her newest novel, Turnback Ridge (Torrey House Press, 2022).
Joseph Holt is author of the story collection, Golden Heart Parade. He grew up in South Dakota and graduated from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi. Holt has taught at Catapult, the American College of Norway, the University of Minnesota, and elsewhere. His writing has appeared in The Sun, Prairie Schooner, J Journal: New Writing on Justice, and has received an AWP Intro Journals Award. Joseph will be reading from an essay called “Ten Years Sober.”
Sara Eliza Johnson is the author of Bone Map, which was a winner of the 2013 National Poetry Series. Her poetry has appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review, Colorado Review, New England Review, Boston Review, Copper Nickel, Ninth Letter, Blackbird, Crazyhorse, Pleiades, the Best New Poets series, Salt Hill, Cincinnati Review, and the Academy of American Poets Poem-A-Day Program, among other venues. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award, two Winter Fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and a residency from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Johnson is an assistant professor at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Sara will be reading from her second book of poetry, Vapor.
Daryl Farmer is the author of Bicycling beyond the Divide, a nonfiction book that chronicles a bicycle ride across the U.S. West, and Where We Land a collection of short fiction. His recent work has appeared in Terrain.org, Ploughshares, and Natural Bridges among other literary journals. He is an associate professor at The University of Alaska, Fairbanks where he has served as director of the MFA program in Creative Writing. He is also affiliated faculty for the Northern Studies program, and for six years served as a facility member in the University of Alaska, Anchorage low-residency MFA program. Daryl will read from a travel book in progress about Iceland titled “Embracing the Wind.”
