Teaching Artist Training for the AIS Program

Dates for the next Teaching Artist Training are TBA.

 What is the Teaching Artist Training?

This professional development training supports artists seeking to qualify for the Fairbanks Teaching Artist Roster (managed by Fairbanks Arts) of the Artists in Schools program and the Alaska State Teaching Artist Roster (STAR). This will be an informative series of presentations by expert teachers and administrators sharing knowledge, skills, and techniques. A certificate will be awarded on completion of the course to equip you to work effectively as a teaching artist in classrooms and beyond.

Topics covered in a Teaching Artist Training

  • The business of being a teaching artist: advice on negotiating contracts, marketing yourself as a teaching artist, and conducting artist residencies in schools;
  • Collaboration for successful residencies: community building among local artists and educators about teaching in and through the arts;
  • Alaska State standards, student developmental levels, differentiated learning, classroom management strategies;
  • Review of all application requirements for Fairbanks AIS program eligibility.

Who should become an AIS Teaching Artist?

If you are an Alaskan artist with teaching experience and/or want to engage in arts education-rooted artist residencies with K-12 grade students, this program is for you! This training is a required component for participating in the Artists in Schools residency program. It is intended for Alaskan artists with a developed artistic practice—i.e., those who are highly competent in an artistic discipline and can envision projects they can facilitate for FNSBSD students during residencies spanning 1-4 weeks.

 To become an eligible artist for the AIS program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete a Teaching Artist Training;
  • Submit a Teaching Artist Application form;
  • Schedule interview with the Fairbanks Arts Education Coordinator;

Below is a checklist of AIS Teaching Artist application materials that you can download or print for your convenience.

Not a Fairbanks area artist? Please check with a local arts agency in your area to see if there are additional resources, support, or requirements for participation in arts in education programs, locally. Connect with the Arts Education Program Director at the Alaska State Council on the Arts for information about opportunities supported by ASCA.
