Cold Wax Painting with Allison Juneau

Thursday, June 27th from 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. in the Square Dance Pavilion in Pioneer Park.

Pioneer Park is located at 2300 Airport Way, Fairbanks, Alaska.

Allison Juneau, one of the June featured exhibition artists, will be teaching a workshop on the Cold Wax Painting medium!

Cold wax medium is a unique and versatile oil painting medium with a whole host of possibilities for both arts and crafts! Cold wax is primarily used as an additive to oil paint to create a very thick paste-like paint quality, which is usually applied to canvas or wood panel surfaces with a palette knife. This amazing medium can also be used as a matte varnish for paintings and collages. It can even be applied to paper in multiple thin layers and modified with pencil, crayon, or pastels to build up a complex surface with a fun multi-media effect.

During this workshop, Allison encourages a mindset of experimentation and play! Cold wax has the potential to build up interesting surfaces very quickly. She will demonstrate multiple processes on both canvas and paper at the beginning of the workshop, and then we can all try it out together. She plans to assist participants individually while working on a plein air landscape of the park, for those who would like to see that specific process.

Please feel free to bring a few references if you would like to paint a specific subject. She will provide a few references to work with as well if anyone needs inspiration!

For this workshop: participants are asked to bring their own oil paint set, canvas or wood panel (11 x 14 or under) to work on, and paint clothes or aprons.

Allison gently recommends the following pigments for paticipants’ oil paint set:

  • Titanium white
  • Payne’s grey
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Cadmium red (or an equivalent color)
  • Pthalo or Ultramarine Blue
  • Burnt or Raw Umber
  • Permanent Green or Sap Green

Additional Materials provided by Allison include: Scrap paper and matboard for students to experiment with, palette knives and silicone brushes for everyone to use. (Students are welcome to bring their own from home if desired) and disposable gloves.

Allison is an experienced workshop facilitator. She has taught multiple college-level art classes in drawing and art history, as well as many framing and matting workshops, and demos for the University of Alaska Fairbank’s Fine Arts department.

This event is free and open to the public thanks to our generous donors and sponsors.
