Gift Shop Artist of the Month: Anvil Catlin Williamson

“I believe that all life is precious and purposeful. For this reason, I often choose subjects such as rodents, insects, and endangered species. I find that few narrative characters carry the question of purpose better than the small and disregarded.

Through ceramic and mixed media sculpture I explore the human condition and whether our sense of purpose is innate or the product of our individual experience. I use animal imagery in order to utilize associations with base instinct and survival, often combined with mechanical or industrial components to symbolize external influences. 

In practice I work mainly in ceramics, often utilizing mixed media and found objects, incorporating a high level of detail and layering that often requires a second, closer look. My process involves spending time outside in the wilderness, writing, sketching and observing the natural world and the role of humanity in it.” – Anvil Catlin Williamson
