Gift Shop Artist of the Month: Heather Andersen

For sale in the Gift Shop: Friday, June 7 – Saturday, June 29

We are excited to welcome Heather Andersen and her beautiful masks in the Bear Gallery Gift Shop for the month of June! Here is what Heather says about her work:

Heather Andersen“Born and raised in Alaska, I grew up in Fairbanks and moved to Homer in 2011.  When I am not working on my art, you can usually find me at the beach- combing the shores for a new piece of sea glass or another little piece of driftwood.  I also enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, or just taking in what nature has to offer. I enjoy a night on the town just as much as an evening spent snuggled up with a cup of tea and a good book.

I started making these little masks in high school many years ago, and they have stuck with me and continue to evolve each year.  Each piece is carefully handcrafted by hand. Once the pieces are dried and kiln fired, the masks are then pit fired. This type of firing creates the unique coloration as the sawdust burns around them. No two masks are identical.  I use nature’s bounty to decorate them.

My art is strongly influenced by nature and by Native Alaskan Ceremonial masks.  The rich history and emotional stories behind the traditional masks of Native Alaskans has inspired me to create my own representation.

Enjoy!”

Visit the Bear Gallery Gift Shop in May to browse Heather’s beautiful masks.

People’s Choice – John E. Poirrier “Walking, Stalking”

The Fairbanks Watercolor Society, one of our long-time affiliates, is celebrating their 20th year of creating and exhibiting art in the watercolor medium this year! What started out with a few dedicated painters has grown into a group of over 100 individuals that offers programs, opportunities for growth and education to its members.

During the month of May, the Watercolor Society celebrated with an exhibition of art created in watermedia which featured a People’s Choice Award ceremony during the opening reception. With the exhibit coming to a close at the end of May, the Watercolor Society has decided to extend visitors’ ability to view some of the beautiful works by showing the first 9 paintings chosen by the public during the awards.
