We can not think of a better way to close out National Poetry Month than to finally announce the winners of this year’s Statewide Poetry Contest hosted by Fairbanks Arts!

However, before we do, we have a little side story… Usually, we would have already hosted a special reading featuring the contest winners during National Poetry Month (as our original contest communications indicated would happen in 2021)… but like many things over the past year, things got interesting! Back in March, our shipment of poems from all over Alaska took quite the unexpected detour on their way to arriving to this year’s esteemed poetry judge, Emily Wall. We already knew that poetry can be adventurous, but goodness! Due to this delay, we will now be celebrating this year’s awardees with a special virtual presentation of poetry in late May. We wish to extend our deep gratitude to this year’s contest participants, Statewide Poetry Contest judge, and our members and supporters for your patience.

This year’s entries were reviewed and given honors by Emily Wall, judge for the 2021 Statewide Poetry Contest

Emily Wall is a Professor of English at the University of Alaska. She holds an M.F.A. in poetry and her poems have been published in journals across the US and Canada, most recently in Prairie Schooner and Alaska Quarterly Review. She has been nominated for multiple Pushcart Prizes and her most recent book, Flame, won the Minerva Rising chapbook prize. She has two books published with Salmon Poetry: Liveaboard and Freshly Rooted. Her next book, Breaking Into Air:  Birth Poems is forthcoming from Red Hen Press.
