About the Exhibition
Now in its 40th year, our 64th Parallel annual juried show is Fairbanks Arts Association’s longest-running exhibition! The open call ran throughout August and September, inviting artists 18 and older from across Interior Alaska to submit up to four original works in any medium for consideration. This year’s juror, Christopher Burch (San Francisco & St. Louis), had the challenge of curating the exhibition and naming awardees from over 150 submissions from Interior Alaskan artists.
Opening Reception
Join us Friday, October 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. for the opening reception and awards ceremony, with awards announced around 6 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
The Juror: Christopher Burch
Christopher Burch is an artist and educator based in San Francisco, CA, and St. Louis, MO. He received the Painting Fellowship for his graduate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute (MFA 2008).
He shows globally and has exhibited with The Museum of African Diaspora, Luggage Store Gallery, White Walls Gallery, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and The Headlands Center for the Arts.
Christopher Burch’s works conflate the distinctions between lived/living human experience, mythology, folklore, and history. Otherworldly yet infused with a gripping sense of reality. Within Burch’s works, influenced by the accounts of painting, narrative, portraiture, landscape, folklore, surrealist literature, and Black rituals of transfiguration (both sacred and secular), we see life and death, rebirth, retribution, and the afterlife as an ever-evolving thematic structure. Here, we see the artist as a storyteller, expounding upon human testimony, at the intersection of myth, identity, and power, as a transmutable force within lived, living, and felt experience.
