September 7 & 8 at INTER:CONNECT State Arts Conference

The 2018 Certification Course for the Artists in Schools Program will take place September 7-8, 2018 at the Alaska State Council on the Arts Conference, INTER:CONNECT Alaska Arts Convergence in Fairbanks, AK

OPEN TO STATEWIDE TEACHING ARTISTS

Fairbanks Arts matches artists to schools for several weeks of artistic residency through the Artists in Schools (AIS) Program within the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. While Fairbanks Arts manages the AIS program for FNSBSD, Artists in Schools is a statewide program of the Alaska State Council on the Arts that is supported by the State of Alaska and the National Endowment for the Arts with additional funding from the Rasmuson Foundation. Participation in the AIS program comes with opportunities for teaching artists to expand their practice and reach by serving students throughout the state of Alaska.

AIS residencies are active studies that span traditional and contemporary art forms including music, dance, Alaska Native arts, media and digital arts, visual arts, literary arts, drama, and more.

What is the Teaching Artist Training?

Professional development supportive of artists seeking to qualify for the Alaska State Teaching Artist Roster (STAR). This will be an informative series of presentations by expert teachers and administrators who will share knowledge, skills, and techniques. A certificate will be awarded on completion of the course to equip you to work effectively as a teaching artist in classrooms and beyond.
Advice on how to negotiate contracts, market yourself as a teaching artist, and how to join STAR of the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
Dialogue and community building among local artists and educators about teaching in and through the arts. Discussion topics will include: Application process, importance of residencies, Alaska State standards, developmental levels, differentiated learning, classroom management strategies, collaboration for successful residencies, and the business of being a teaching artist.

Teaching Artists may also register for the first day of INTER:CONNECT 2018 Alaska Arts Convergence (see registration below).

All attendees of INTER:CONNECT can expect to:

Strengthen statewide relationships and networks to support their work
Exchange stories, ideas and knowledge about the value of arts and cultures in Alaska
Discover and fortify practical skills and resources needed to do their work as individuals and groups

Fairbanks Arts suggests reading the 2017-18 Fairbanks Arts & Cultural Education (FACE) Handbook to become familiar with the Fairbanks Artists in Schools (AIS) program to see if it is the right fit for you. In order to become an eligible artist for the AIS program, you must meet the following criteria:

Artist must complete a Teaching Artist Training. These sessions are currently offered once a year. Please know that you must attend all sessions in the Training in order to receive certification.
Artist must submit all necessary application materials.
Artist must schedule interview with the Fairbanks Arts Education Coordinator.
