The Visual Arts Committee schedules art exhibits in the Bear Gallery: solo shows, group exhibits, three juried exhibits--held annually for artists living in the Interior Alaska, traveling exhibits and group exhibits coordinated by FNSB school district.

Juried exhibits for artists of the Interior include the following: the 64th Parallel Contemporary Fine Art Exhibition held each October, Patterns of Influence Exhibit in February, and the Interior Artisans Exhibit in April. It is our objective to bring jurors in from outside the Fairbanks area to give Interior artists the opportunity to connect with a broader arts community.

Our one curated exhibit, Quilt Alaska is a biennial exhibit sponsored by the Cabin Fever Quilter's Guild. Annual and biennial juried traveling exhibits include the Alaska Photography Center's Rarefied Light and Anchorage Museum of History and Art' s Earth, Fire, and Fiber and All Alaska Juried Art Exhibition.

Up with Art, an annual show produced in March by the North Star Borough School District is a juried art exhibit for elementary, middle and high school students.

In addition, each month in the Gift Shop we feature a changing display of paintings by the Watercolor Society of Fairbanks, and monthly featured Authors and Artists.

Each November the Visual Arts Committee selects gallery shows for the next two years with a Portfolio Review. A panel of 7 local artists, who represent different media will review submitted slides. Portfolios are chosen solely on the merits of the slides entered. Deadline for submissions to Portfolio Review is always October 31. Please see "Download Forms" page for more details.

The Visual Arts Committee is fortunate to have other arts organizations serve as resources: the Watercolor Society, Fairbanks Weavers and Spinners, Cabin Fever Quilter's Guild, Camera Arts, and the UAF Student Art Club. Members help with exhibit set-ups and are involved in making decisions about the gallery and other events throughout the year. The Visual Arts Committee meets in the Bear Gallery at 5:30 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. New members are always welcome.

The jurors evaluate each portfolio and rate on a scale of 1 to 5. The highest and lowest score are dropped and the remaining five scores are averaged to determine the applicants final score. All artists receiving a score of 3.5 or above then become eligible to have a solo exhibit in Bear Gallery. Fairbanks Arts Association does not guarantee an exhibit based on score as preference of available months is given to those receiving the highest scores.
