At the 2005 Art Expo Fairbanks Arts Association announced plans to revive its concert and film series once popular in the Fairbanks Community: ‘Mainstage Fairbanks’ and the ‘Oldies but Goldies Film Series.’ Both are past successful programs that ended once funding was unavailable. FAA brought them back as a way to support local talent by providing a concert stage venue that isn’t always easily available to local performers. In addition FAA wanted to create activities that helped market Pioneer Park as an arts center.
Mainstage Fairbanks-- ‘Mainstage Fairbanks’ first appeared in the 1980s. At that time many arts organizations utilized the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts theatre, but have since built their own venues or rented larger facilities. Pioneer Park administration sought ways to fill the theatre with new life. Reviving ‘Mainstage Fairbanks’ with the help of FAA served as the perfect answer. ‘Mainstage Fairbanks’ also provides a paying venue for local artists. “Many artists are requested to volunteer their services and it is important for them to receive pay for their work. Fairbanks Arts Association offers a stipend to ‘Mainstage Fairbanks’ performers. The types of performances vary to include music, dance, choir and magic. Shows take place at the Alaska Centennial Center theatre for the Arts at 7pm. Tickets are $10 per person and available at the door.
Performances by local musicians, dance and theatre groups are also featured during Art EXPO and the FAA and FNSB Parks and Rec co-sponsored Gazebo Nights every night from June to August. The series included performances of folk , pop, classical, jazz, cabaret, sacred and island drumming, and storytellers. For this summer's schedule please click here.
T.I.P.S.-- Thousands of people attend the many special summer events that are held at Pioneer Park and local entertainers have been instrumental in the success of these events. However, there remains an opportunity to perform for an audience of local families and interesting visitors from all over the world at other times of the summer. A new performance program, TIPS (Totally Impromptu Performance Series) concerts will provide a continual performance atmosphere, for even the casual visitor – who just happens to walk through the park.
The TIPS program will be held from noon to 8:00pm daily and scheduled for 45minute sets during the months of June, July & August. Acoustic performances are encouraged, as performers are obliged to bring their own equipment. No PA or tech will be provided, although electricity is available for small amps, etc. Performers may solicit tips and/or sell CD’s. Join in and help to create a festive atmosphere at your community park. Sign up to be a performer at any time of the day or week that works best for you.
